2021 College Football Rankings – 16 Team Playoff, Week 10

Week 10 was a lot of near misses to unranked teams – or in the Michigan State case, not missing an upset at all. The College Football Playoff committee had its beauty pageant verdict earlier this week, but why use that when you can use a correct answer like mine? Now – I can see the committee ranking Oregon so highly – it’s win at Ohio State looks better each week. But can we really yada-yada past their underwhelming Pac-12 results? I don’t know. But the Pac-12 is not impressing the committee of one here.

Obviously Ohio State’s #10 ranking is controversial as is Oregon’s #21. But Oregon’s loss – a road loss to a 3-6 Stanford team is the worst loss of the CFP contenders. Ohio State’s home loss to Oregon thus looks worse. But Ohio State still has a lot of quality win chances to come. Notre Dame is a little high relative to the eye test for me – but the resume is strong if you consider that winning is the most important criteria.

2021 College Football Rankings – 16 Team Field – Week 9

For the single-digit number of people who follow this space, we’ve been using the usual Bradley-Terry style rankings over the season. With 9 weeks in the books, Georgia has clearly created a bit of separation from the field. Michigan State with its thriller over Michigan moves into a season best position, while Ohio State moves into the Top 10. The Buckeyes are in good shape still – plenty of brownie points are there to be had.

It was a fairly slow week last week – though there were a couple of good games. Oregon defeating UCLA put the Pac-12 in the spotlight, but overall the rankings committee sitting on this easy chair typing kind of hates the Pac-12 in general. Ohio State continues its slow mosey up the rankings – but all of its best ranking brownie points are still ahead.

Fitting the 16 Team Field

As explained in previous posts – I wanted to use a Champions League-style mechanism to assign teams. So – looking at the power and Group of 5 conference average rankings the last 3 years, we allocate berths this way:

• ACC (2 teams): Wake Forest (4), Pittsburgh (28) <- Virginia is higher ranked, but behind Pittsburgh in the ACC standings so we will defer to that
• Big 12 (2 teams): Oklahoma (5), Oklahoma State (7) <- Baylor at 9 is a reasonable choice.
• Big Ten (3 teams): Michigan (3), Michigan State (8), Iowa (10)
• Pac 12 (2 teams): Oregon (22), Utah (34)
• SEC (4 teams): Georgia (1), Alabama (11), Ole Miss (13), Kentucky (14)
• Others (3 teams): Cincinnati (2), Notre Dame (6), San Diego State (12)

After Georgia continued to show that – while not exciting they can swallow up any team alive – along with Iowa being voted off the top of the mountain, here is what the rankings look like. Note the score is a Bradley-Terry rank and it’s multiplicative. So a team with a rating of 200 is likely to beat a team rated 100, 2/3 of the time.

As we discussed last week, I am populating my fictional tournament using a Champions League style paradigm. Based on the last 3 years performance – the conferences get slotted like so.

Merging Pandemic Obsessions – Building a Better College Football Playoff

So – with 6 weeks in the can, the 2021 College Football Rankings are starting to take shape. With the pandemic in full force last year, it was hard to do a computer model with almost no interconference play of consequence. The Big Ten and Pac-12 played tiny seasons! Given that, this year is a bit of a return to “normal”. One of the fun stories of the offseason were mouth noises from powers that be to expand the College Football Playoff. Of course, now with a hint of a plan, there comes resistance to having anything nice.

That said, idle minds wander – and got me thinking … what would a more inclusive playoff look like, and how could you do it in a reasonably fair way? To craft a perfect (to me) playoff, I had a few goals:

• It should reward conference champions. It’s the majority of a team’s schedule. The primacy of winning that makes sense to me.
• There should be diversity among regions and conferences. One of the tough parts of ranking teams is the general lack of nonconference games compared to other sports. It creates some wide error bars. Going strictly by a Bradley Terry model is not sufficient.
• Make sure the best teams in the country (by season accomplishment) are in the field

At the same time, with a year working at home and having children and weekend afternoon obligations often, European soccer became a real attraction. The games go on early in the States, only take two hours – and are exciting when good teams play. At the top of this is the annual UEFA Champions League (UCL), and its lower level competition the Europa League. What is interesting is that the Champions League – in broad brushstrokes – is a bit like the challenge of the College Football Playoff. You have a lot of teams from different leagues and you have to adjudicate who enters the competition. So the Champions’ League makes an obvious inspiration when looking at what a good College Football Playoff would look like

So, how do we implement this? UEFA uses 5-year performance to determine Coefficients for each League and allots spots accordingly. I’m not interested in the long long season for every team – we have to be practical. Instead, I used a 3-year club coefficient – basically the time for a particular class to be really productive over a career.

Since I’ve been ranking teams since 2008 – I have end of season rankings for all the teams. I assigned points based on post-Bowl rank.

• Top 5 – 8 points
• 6-10 – 5 points
• 11-25 – 3 points
• 26-40 – 2 points
• 41-50 – 1 point

Using these point values we calculate 3-year averages and then apply them to the conference affiliation the following year. This means that a conference gets the benefit of its new members for playoff spots. Using these coefficients we allocate the 16 playoff positions to the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, Pac-12 and Other (every other conference and independents). The Top 4 seeds go to the Top 4 Conference Champs (and if an Independent cracks the Top 4) Finally, brackets are shifted as necessary to avoid intraconference first round matchups.

Example: Fitting the 2019 College Football Playoff

Using the 3-year formula, the 2016-18 ranks ended up with the following points and berths

• ACC: 24.7 points (2 berths)
• Big 12: 15.7 (2)
• Big Ten: 28.7 (3)
• SEC: 37.7 (4)
• Pac-12: 17.3 (2)
• Other: 26 (3)

Applying the relative weights to a 16 team field and using the “pre bowl” ranking, we get the following

• ACC – Clemson (3), Virginia (36)
• Big 12 – Oklahoma (4), Baylor (15)
• Big Ten – Ohio State (1), Penn State (6), Wisconsin (7)
• SEC – LSU (3), Georgia (5), Alabama (8), Auburn (9)

2020-21 UEFA Power Rankings #10

I have not written as much lately as we have gone into mostly domestic play, but as we get through the holiday matches – there are definitely some trends to note.

• The Premier League and Bundesliga dominate the top of the charts. Considering the countries’ respective performances in the European competitions this is not a surprise. Spain has been fine too, but Real Madrid and Barcelona have been underwhelming compared to previous seasons.
• The last three seasons the Premier League champion had at least 98 points out of 114 possible. This year, currently nobody is on track to break 80 points. So combine that with England’s dominant performance in the UEFA competition, and you get a glut of teams at the top of my table
• Serie A has definitely fallen behind the other three federations in the Big 5. It really is a England, Spain, Germany and the rest.

2021 I Promise to Read More #1 – Born a Crime

Born a Crime purports to be Trevor Noah’s memoir of growing up right at the breakpoint of Apartheid South Africa, but it could just as easily be described as a portrait of his absolutely remarkable mother Patricia. Noah’s version of his mother is a brilliant, indefatigable, frustrating, impossible, deeply religious, funny, beautiful woman who was determined that her children not shoulder the undue responsibility and burden that comes with being born black. What we are left with is a woman who had to overcome a lot to be able to live a life on her own terms.

The title of the memoir is a reference to Noah being the product of Patricia’s relationship with a white, Swiss … well, he is a pretty private guy. It’s hard to really say what he does. But he was someone Patricia met as she was surviving living in the city on networks of subletters – since of course black people were not allowed to live in the area whites lived, even though they were required to do work there. The good thing was that there were enough foreign whites who though the whole system was sufficiently absurd to offer some opportunities. In any case, when Patricia decides she wants a child – she reaches out to Robert (the Swiss guy) but without an obligation to be a parent. However, once Trevor is born – Robert still wants to be a part of it. s.

This leads to the dark but funny business of the three being unable to be a family in public in the apartheid system. Noah tells one story of how he runs after his dad and Robert runs, Trevor not realizing that is was not a game. Trevor’s mixedness and skin color lead in his telling to life where he is disconnected – colored in some sense, black in some others. In particular, Trevor talks about identifying as black and how he eventually got there, and that is one of the more thoughtful parts of the book.

Noah credits his mother for giving him more exposure and education than others might have had in his position. She was relentless in her commitment to her and Trevor’s independence. Not only is that shown in the mixed family, it also shows as she taught herself how to type and how she refused to stay in Soweto, the town where black people were basically cordoned off. She never stops trying to make ends meet, and when her husband Abel starts losing his own auto repair business due to his own drunkenness, Patricia took over. The story of her and Abel is particularly striking, and it takes the book into more harrowing territory, especially with the unsurprising treatment of the two from local police.

The surprising and overriding impression you get from the book is thoughtfulness. Noah offers an insider critique of apartheid (how arbitrary the racial caste system really was), mixed along with his own stories of turning into a small time fence, or his own youthful pyromania and where that took him. The memoir, while containing a lot of information about living in South Africa at that time, is not a drudge. It’s still a terrific entertainment on top of everything else.
